Study by Cambridge University in England Reveals Key Answer

Until recently, there was no practical way to identify dead regions of hearing cells in the ear. However, a new British-developed procedure using standard test equipment now allows for identification of dead hearing cell regions. The study suggests that the presence or absence of dead regions may have serious implications in the fitting of hearing aids.

This Research reveals that amplifying dead cells is a mistake which will result in poorer speech understanding in noise. A new type of digitally programmable microcircuit is now available using nanoscience technology that can be programmed to bypass the dead cells. As a result, the patient’s usable hearing cells receive amplification, thereby improving speech understanding in noise. Employing a like method in diagnostic testing using a specialized speech in noise test, simulates hearing in a noisy crowd. This helps determine maximum speech understanding by frequency shaping the new hearing aid. The results have been phenomenal.

Analog Technology

The hearing aid industry does not manufacture as many analog hearing aids as in the past and some manufacturers only make digital devices. There are some long-term hearing aid patients who favor analog technology and continue to wear this circuitry today. The best circuitry option for the patient is a combination of which technology will provide the most benefit and which sound the patient is most comfortable wearing.

Some patients with more severe hearing loss do not like the sound quality of digital hearing aids when compared with their analog devices. Their auditory system has become accustomed to the analog aid/s. In the past there were analog hearing aids and then analog programmable hearing aids. When digital technology became widely available, many hearing lossOld and New Hearing Aid patients switched to that technology. Most new hearing aids today are developed using digital technology and your hearing specialist will help you determine which circuitry is better for your specific hearing needs.

Digital Technology

When you are fit with digital hearing aids, your hearing test is stored in the reNew Hearing database. Your hearing specialist then connects your hearing aid to the computer and programs the device so it can read the degree and pattern of hearing loss (prescription) for the individual ear. This allows the hearing aids to be customized for your individual hearing loss. Digital hearing aids will have some ability to automatically change the volume and/or noise for you, and/or you may change the volume and/or memory settings for different noise environments depending on the technology of the hearing aids.

Hearing aids come in many common styles, though not every one is right for every individual. Factors such as the wearer’s level of hearing loss, size of ear canal, even dexterity issues impact which style your hearing care professional ultimately recommends.

Hearing aids consist of a hard plastic case worn behind the ear and connected to a plastic earmold that fits inside the outer ear. The electronic parts are held in the case behind the ear. Sound travels from the hearing aid through the earmold and into the ear. BTE aids are used by people of all ages for mild to profound hearing loss.

A new kind of BTE aid is an open-fit hearing aid. Small, open-fit aids fit behind the ear completely, with only a narrow tube inserted into the ear canal, enabling the canal to remain open. For this reason, open-fit hearing aids may be a good choice for people who experience a buildup of earwax, since this type of aid is less likely to be damaged by such substances. In addition, some people may prefer the open-fit hearing aid because their perception of their voice does not sound “plugged up.”

In-The-Ear Hearing Aids

Custom earmold that fits within the outer portion of the ear.

Hearing aids fit completely inside the outer ear and are used for mild to severe hearing loss. The case holding the electronic components is made of hard plastic. Some ITE aids may have certain added features installed, such as a telecoil. A telecoil is a small magnetic coil that allows users to receive sound through the circuitry of the hearing aid, rather than through its microphone. This makes it easier to hear conversations over the telephone. A telecoil also helps people hear in public facilities that have installed special sound systems, called induction loop systems. Induction loop systems can be found in many churches, schools, airports, and auditoriums. ITE aids usually are not worn by young children because the casings need to be replaced often as the ear grows.

Canal aids fit into the ear canal and are available in two styles. The in-the-canal (ITC) hearing aid is made to fit the size and shape of a person’s ear canal.

Completely-In-Canal Hearing Aids

Only the head of a tiny plastic line shows outside the canal.

A completely-in-canal (CIC) hearing aid is nearly hidden in the ear canal. Both HS and CIC types are used for mild to moderately severe hearing loss.

Because they are small, canal aids may be difficult for a person to adjust and remove. In addition, canal aids have less space available for batteries and additional devices, such as a telecoil. They usually are not recommended for young children or for people with severe to profound hearing loss because their reduced size limits their power and volume.

Musicians Earplugs are a custom product, made individually for each user. They can be purchased from licensed hearing professionals.

Musicians practice and perform in a variety of different settings. They are exposed to high levels of sound, sometimes for long periods and may require different amounts of protection depending on sound levels encountered during rehearsals and performance. Some musicians use one type of attenuator in one ear and one type in the other, depending on the source and location of the sound.
